The youth is a hero in the level of instinct, while the tall soldier moral and traditional.

    Tips for Tomorrow's Debate

Do use examples, statistics, logical reasonings, and rhetorics and tactics to elaberate on your idea. Do NOT just repeat your point of view again and again. If you have to, try to find another way, to either deepen it or extend it.

Do not say " my friends, please answer our question!". Try to say, " now that the other side fails to address the problem we just mentioned, they are escaping/evading our question which shows their incapibility of reasoning.

Do not try to convice the other side because they can NEVER be persuaded by you. The one who needs your convince are the judges, the audience, and most inportantly, yourself. Do not look at the other side during the whole debate. You may just listen to them and keep eye contact with the judges and the audience.

Do not idle on just one point of yours. In any debate, not every issue is expected to be covered. All you have to do is arrange your argument in a systematic way in which you may highlight just one or two strongest points and make it powerful and unfalliable. Try to steer the whole debate in the way your side wants and prevent giving too much territory to the other side by admitting part of their points and say that's something we would also agree. You can NEVER disagree on everything they say.

Do deplore your team well because teamwork is essential in any debate. The first speaker may focus on constructure the system of argument and brief on the reaons that may follow. The second and third speakers are not supposed to read or recite things before hand. What you may say is congient to what the opposition side may annouce before you. The last speaker's tasks are usually not so easy as it seems because whether you can win or lose largely depends on how well you wrap up the entire discussion and how skillful you are to seize the last chance to call and win the hearts of the audience and judges.

Debate Terms you may want to adopt:

    1. We firmly believe that.....and the reasons are as follows. First, second, last but not least.

    2. The other side committed several mistakes and they are wrong, firstly, in saying that...

    3. I would like to devide my speech into %% parts. First I would like to make some comments on what the side has just claimed. And the I would like to tell you why they are dangerous to say that. Let's first take a look at what they said.

    4. Wonderful speeches! but I wouldn't help but find some flaws in the conerstone of their argument becasue they asserted that.... which is not true....

5.I would like to sum up their speeches into two general mistakes and rebut them one by one.

6.It sounds plausible but you just can not try to use a single matter to prove a universal truth. This is mistake call " Hasty Generalization" in logic.

    7. We agree with the other side in saying that.... but we dare not agree with them with the case of...

    8. Thanks for your question. This is a point to which I shall return later. Back to the topic.....

    9. You said that.... so are you telling us that.......

    10. Yes, it is (positive adj.) that ...but don't you think it is ( negative adj.) that....

That's all I can retospect on within such a short notice. Good luck with debate!

    Marrie Curie

To tell you which person I admire most is difficult for me. I admire many people. They work in different fields and have their own special experience. So I changed the title a little into "the scientist I admire most" in order to correspond with the Text 1 in Unit 3. The scientist I admire most is a shy but ambitious woman. In her life time, she had one obsession: to learn. And it is because of this obsession that she turned out to be a person who won Nobel Prize twice. I think you have already known who she is--a Nobel Prize Pioneer at the Pantheon, Marrie Curie.

    Make Our Voice Heard

Below is a speech delivered by Diane, a friend of mine, who also went to CCTV Cup English Speaking Competition with me, 2004. The speech is used for her national finals. She has an amazing voice, 100% pure American English accent and is able to make wonderful speeches out of simple words. I enjoy this speech very much and I hope you will when I present it to you tomorrow in Ms. Ma's British Literature Class. I have also uploaded her voice into our shared email box: class403@gmail.com (in case you forget it). You can download the mp3 matierial whenever you feel like to.

Belated Happy National Holiday and Happy Mid-Autumn Festival!

    :)

“Diane, can you speak a little louder, please?” That’s what my teacher said to me on the first day of school. I almost burst into tears as so many students turned to watch me sit down in the corner that belonged to me. After school, my teacher found me, smiling, she said: “You don’t have to be afraid of anyone. People just want to know about you so the next time just let them hear what you have to say. After so many years, I am still a shy person as I was fifteen years ago but the difference is I am not any more afraid of letting people know about me, hear about my ideas.

People, as we are, are never isolated individuals. We all live on the planet where lives all the other people as well. So keeping oneself excluded would never work, or else we would always be trapped in that little corner of ours. We have to step into the world as we are in fact part of it.

I’ve always remembered what Simba said to her daughter: we are one. So what’s to be afraid of? Since human beings are virtually linked souls. Just tell others what we really think, how we really feel. Even if we do have the wrong idea, we will have the chance to correct our mistakes. And if we don’t, it’s all right.

But if we never spoke our mind, we will never know what we are missing out in this world. We will never know what we can actually make of ourselves. And we will never know what is needed to live a life with other people. When there is giving, there is receiving. That’s how the communication circle works. We are all very blessed to have so many people hear our voice. So don’t refuse the blessing for life is based on it. Just remember when the world knows more about us, we know more about the world.

So today, can you hear my voice?"

The two books:  Pride and Prejudice writtern by Jane Austen and  Jane eyre writtern by Charlotte Bronte , both native English novels ,are in my reading plan as I want to acquaint with some maners and customs from the books.Another two books :The Odyssey writtern by Homer from Greece and The Divine Comedy writtern by Dante from Italy ,are also amid my plan as I want to learn the relationship between these Gods and also their names and duties.Because these knowledge often appears in many other books and each time I met them,I was stopped. So I think they would be very helpful. They are not origin of English, so I give the reason and I hope Mrs Zhu can understand.

    The Moon Festival----Sue

      Bright moon,when was your birth?

    Winecup in hand ,Iask the deep blue sky;

Not knowing what year it is tonight

In those celestal palaces on hight.

I long to fly back on wind ,

Yet dread those crystal towers , those courts of jade,

Freezing to death among  those icy heights!

    Instead I rise to dance with my pale shadow;

Better off, after all, in the world lf men.

     Rounding the red pavilion,

Stooping to look through gauze windows,

    She shines on the sleepless,

    The moon should know no sadness;

Why , then ,is she always full when dear ones are parted ?

Fore men the grief of paring, joy of  reunion ,

    Just as the moon wanes and waxes, is bright or dim;

Always some flaw---and so it has been since of old.

My one wish for you ,then ,is long life

And a share in this loveliness far, you away!

This poem is written by Su Shi ,can you understand it ?

    Blowin' in the Wind

How many roads must a man walk down
Before they call him a man?
How many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand?
How many times must the cannon balls fly
    Before they're forever banned?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

How many years can a mountain exist
Before it's washed to the sea?
How many years can some people exist
Before they're allowed to be free?
How many times can a man turn his head,
And pretending that he just doesn't see?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

How many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
How many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?
How many deaths will it take till he knows

    Ursula's Reading Plan

I think reading long-length novel is very necessary to us this term. Though we already have many reading articles in some subjects, I plan to read The Scarlet Letter and Bible. And I believe it will help me to know much more about the culture of western countries. If time permits, I want to buy some English materials such as 21st CenturyCrazy English and so on.

    book plan

When I first looked at such a long list that Mrs.Zhu made for us, I was actually scared. How can I finish them in comparatively short semester? To read or not to read, that's a question. Well, after concerning both time limitation and my quality, I got a decision that I'm gonna start from ,and . This is a short-time plan. Of course, I must read some other novles after that. At this moment, I just hope I can finish my short plan in time. By the way, I have a problem.  Some of the novles I've mentioned were written in old English . So it must be difficult to read. How can I cope with it? I'm looking forward to the answer. Thanks.

    My Reading Plan

Since we already have many reading materials in the course of 英语小说选读, including three long-length novels, I think reading another long-length novel is enough for this semester. I am going to read Nicholas Nickleby, the third novel of Charles Dickens. The novel consists of 65 chapters, and I plan to read 4 chapters a week, so that to finish it within this semester.

If time permits, I want to read some parts of the Bible to help myself know better about the culture of western countries.

    Jackey's reading plan

This term I would like to read one of my mother’s and my favorite novel Jane Eyer, written by Charlotte Bronte. Though I have read the Chinese version before, I think reading the original work is a great challenge. In spite of this, I shall have a try. If I have enough time, I would like to read some parts of The Holmes, written by Arthur Conan Doyle, because I like detective stories very much.

I am sorry to say that our new plan has to be given up

Tonight, it is the first time we have studied together. but the outcome is not so satisfictory. And I am so sorry that Nick's plan has to be given up. By the way,we should thank Nick for his proposal he raised for our class. Thank you .

It may be difficult to study staying together for we have our own study plans. we may dislike others' study methods,or even disgust. To not interrupt others, and to avoid unpleasant events occured,we'd better put an end to it. Sorry to see that.

May everyone an terrific study and dream realised!

The reading plan in this semester

I have decided to read the Great Expectation written by Charles Disckens all thought this semester. According to this book, I have made a plan of reading it day by day. Each day about ten pages, it takes around forty-five days to get though the whole book. Personally I think it may be difficulty to accomplish it on time, for sometime the plan may be interrupted by some thing. So I will try my best to achieve the plan and manage to appreciate this great novel.
